Submission Guidelines

The Human Rights Observer welcomes original contributions that align with our mission: to expose human rights abuses, elevate underrepresented voices and deepen understanding of justice struggles worldwide. We invite pitches and completed pieces from journalists, human rights defenders, academics, lawyers and others with firsthand experience or expertise.

We publish news reports, investigative pieces, analysis, interviews and opinion essays related to civil liberties, political repression, social justice, migration and other global human rights issues.

What We’re Looking For

Our inhouse team produces field reporting, data-driven journalism, breaking developments and investigations with a human rights angle. Our team also interviews experts, activists, policymakers and survivors that offer depth and perspective. For the following formats, however, we do accept submission:

  • Features & Analysis: In-depth, contextual pieces exploring current or historical issues.
  • Opinion & Commentary: Well-argued, evidence-based essays offering insight, critique, or advocacy.
  • Voices from the Ground: First-person narratives or dispatches from affected communities, frontline workers and grassroots leaders.

Submission Requirements

  • Length:
    • News reports: 600–1,200 words
    • Features/analysis: 1,200–2,000 words
    • Opinion pieces: 800–1,500 words
    • First-person essays: 800–1,500 words
  • Language: Clear, concise and accessible. We accept submissions in English, but are open to translated work if original context is relevant.
  • Originality: Submissions must be original and unpublished elsewhere (including personal blogs and newsletters). We do not accept AI-generated or plagiarized content.
  • Sourcing: All factual claims must be backed by credible sources. Please hyperlink sources where appropriate, or include citations in footnotes or endnotes.
  • Tone: Serious, informed and respectful. We do not accept inflammatory, discriminatory, or partisan political writing.
